Mascara Hack: A Little Bit of Powder?

We all dream of butterfly lashes, ones that with a single blink flutter softly in the wind. False lashes are one option, lash extensions are another, and of course there are probably more mascaras available than there are fish in the sea (I mean, not really, but you get my point). So when a hack comes our way that promises, with a simple trick, that you can get the lashes of your dreams.

The Experience & The Results

All you need for this makeup hack is mascara and some setting powder. The two products I used are Heroine Make Long and Curl Mascara and Too Faced Peach Mattifying Setting Powder (product info is listed at the end). But what you have to do with these two items is a little bit shocking, at least for some makeup lovers. You are going to have to dip the mascara brush into the setting powder. Yup, just stick it in there. It’s actually harder than it sounds because of the shape of the brush, so I couldn’t get the powder evenly across the bristles as I originally wanted. Then you need to stick the brush back into the tube so that that the powder and mascara mix together. The resulting mixture doesn’t look ominous, but I was still skeptical.

Left: Mascara Hack Mixture Right: Just Mascara

The results, honestly, are not very impressive. When I look back on the video I made, I think that I can see a thickening of the lashes, especially near the base. But I am not sure if that’s just wishful thinking or if other people can see it, too. So you’re going to have to let me know what you think.

The Conclusion

I don’t think this hack is worth trying. One, setting powder isn’t meant for this kind of use, so I am not sure how safe this method is for your eyes. Two, this is probably going to ruin your mascara brush with repeated use, especially if you don’t clean it thoroughly… I know I didn’t. And lastly, pushing and mixing a setting powder repeatedly into your mascara tube is most likely going to affect the mascara itself. My guess is that it will eventually ruin it. And is that a risk worth taking? Well, that’s really up to you to decide, but personally, I would rather find a mascara that checks all the boxes than to try making this hack work for you.
